SMART ENGLISH READERS

Where Innovation Meets Opportunity

All About SER

What Sets Us Apart

Smart English Readers is a comprehensive programme aimed to expose children at a young age to English language acquisition. The majority of the children at the age of four are not able to comprehend basic English when it comes to displaying their proficiency in reading and writing. One of the most significant components in English Language acquisition is phonetics which defines children’s ability to speak and read. Therefore, CEL Academic aims to provide comprehensive support for children to learn phonetics in enhancing their reading and speaking skills through Smart English Readers Programme.

Programme Outline

Smart English Readers has been segmented into three stages of pedagogical intervention which defines students’ proficiency in English Language articulation. These stages will be assigned to students through a free placement test before starting the course.

Level Three

While correct phonologic processing provides the necessary foundation for accurate and effortless decoding, proficient reading is more complex and requires the development of higher-level advanced skills. Reading practice to help you understand long, complex texts about a wide variety of topics, some of which may be unfamiliar. Texts include specialized articles, biographies and summaries.

Level One

To learn to read and spell using phonics, children must learn the relationship between letters (graphemes) and sounds (phonemes) and then remember the exact letter patterns and sequences that represent various speech sounds (Moats, 2000). Other terms for phonics include letter-sound correspondences, letter-sound relationships, and sound-symbol associations. There are several forms of phonics instruction, including synthetic, analytic, embedded, spelling-based, and analogy-based phonics.

Level Two

Basic reading skills include vocabulary acquisition, pre-reading strategies, textual comprehension, organizational skills and response techniques. Mastering basic reading skills enables a reader to increase their reading speed, comprehension, and overall vocabulary. Decoding or sounding out words is the first step in reading. Children can decode when they understand that each letter of the alphabet has a corresponding sound. Children then learn how to look at words in print, isolate each separate sound, then blend them to read the word. The goal of phonics instruction is to enable readers to become proficient at decoding, so they can read words on their own and with little effort.
